Fleas, fleas & fleas

Fleas can seem like an uphill battle.  That is because once you see one flea, that is only 5% of your real problem and the infestation started 6-9 weeks “BEFORE” that.

In order to tackle your flea problem, you will have to be consistent, patient, and very diligent.  You need to first understand that if you apply or give any flea preventative—it is only effective if you also treat the environment your pet is in.  You need to ensure your home is treated.  (AND MAKE SURE IF YOU VACCUMED YOUR CARPETS—DISPOSE OF THE VACCUM CLEANER BAG)   You need to treat your yard. All pets (dogs and cats) should also be treated.  Flea prevention must be given consistently for 3 months in order to get through the entire flea cycle….and DON’T STOP THEN!

The best flea medication for any particular dog will depend on the dog owner's expectations and needs. Some owners prefer flea medications which can be relied on to prevent heartworms in addition to fleas. Others prefer a flea medication which will control ticks as well, particularly if their dogs spends time in tick-infested areas. Some owners prefer a topical product rather than giving their dog a tablet. Others prefer a tablet rather than dealing with a liquid topical medication.  There are pros and cons about all products, and as much as we hope—there is nothing 100% effective.  The sad fact, birds, squirrels, raccoons, deer, and  other companions — can be a breading ground for fleas and the minute they step foot in your yard—they are there and can find your pet.   This is one reason why we say — you have to keep on your flea meds year round.

Like other flea meds, once it is applied, it is immediately killing the adult fleas.  In two weeks you might see new fleas hatching from the egg that were already on your pet.  It does not mean that these are the same fleas or that the product is not working, but remember consistency is the key to this battle.

Revolution® Flea Medication (Feline )

Revolution® is also a topical liquid medicine which is used once monthly for cats. Revolution® in cats is effective in controlling not only fleas but also prevents heartworms, roundworms, hookworms, sarcoptic mange mites (which cause scabies) and one species of tick (known as Dermacentor variabilis). It should be noted that there are many other species of ticks which can infect dogs and cats and Revolution® is not considered to be effective in controlling these ticks.

Capstar® (Feline & Canine)

® rapid treatment of fleas on cats and dogs Capstar® (nitenpyram) is a once a day medication approved for use in the treatment of flea infestations on dogs and puppies, cats and kittens 4 weeks of age or older and at least 2 pounds of body weight. To properly control fleas all pets must be treated and the outside and inside environments also need to be treated to prevent a reoccurrence.

Comfortis® (Canine)

Comfortis® is an oral flea prevention using what is called spinosad. It is for dogs (sorry no cats yet!) that are over 14 weeks of age and they must be at least 5lbs.
